Tucker, Bratkowski named coordinators

Posted Jan 13, 2012

Cullen will remain as Jaguars' defensive line coach as Mularkey begins building staff.

When it came to hiring coordinators, Mike Mularkey said the plan was to move quickly.

He has done just that.

Mularkey, named the Jaguars’ third head coach on Wednesday, announced on Friday the hiring of three key assistant coaches, including assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski.

Joe Cullen also was retained as the team’s defensive line coach, and Mark Duffner has not yet signed but will be returning to coach the linebackers.

Tucker, the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator the last three seasons, served as the team’s interim head coach the last five games of this past season following the dismissal of head coach Jack Del Rio. Tucker coached the Jaguars to a 2-3 record in five games.

The Jaguars’ defense also made dramatic improvement this season with Tucker calling the defensive signals. After ranking 28th in the NFL defensively, the Jaguars ranked No. 6 defensively.

Tucker, 40, also reportedly interviewed for an assistant coaching position in Minnesota this week.

Bratkowski, 56, coached with Mularkey as the Atlanta Falcons’ quarterbacks coach this past season. A 20-year NFL veteran, Bratkowski spent the 10 seasons before that as the offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Before joining the Bengals, Bratkowski spent 1999-2000 as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receivers coach, and spent 1995-1998 as the offensive coordinator in Seattle.

Cullen coached the Jaguars’ defensive line each of the past two seasons.
