Inside the Jaguars: MJD questionable for Sunday

Posted Dec 20, 2013

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew questionable for Sunday’s game against Tennessee; S Johnathan Cyprien probable.

JACKSONVILLE – Another day, another day of waiting.

That was the storyline around Maurice Jones-Drew Friday, and two days before the 2013 regular-season home finale, it was the storyline around several Jaguars players.

Jones-Drew, the Jaguars’ three-time Pro Bowl running back, practiced Friday after missing the first two days of practice this week with a hamstring injury. He is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against Tennessee.

Safety Johnathan Cyprien (thigh) also practiced Friday after not practicing Wednesday or Thursday and is listed as probable for Sunday.

“We’ll need to see how they feel,” Head Coach Gus Bradley said as the Jaguars (4-10) prepared to play the Tennessee Titans (5-9) at EverBank Field Sunday at 1 p.m.

“We’ll work them out before the game and finalize that.”

Jones-Drew, the Jaguars’ leading rusher this season with 719 yards and five touchdowns on 208 carries, missed last Sunday’s loss to Buffalo after sustaining a hamstring injury the previous week against Houston.

Bradley said he felt better about Jones-Drew’s chances of playing Sunday after practice Friday.

“He was in on the run plays and he took some actual reps although the tempo was slowed down,” Bradley said after a no-pads practice. “I said, ‘We need to see you where you made tremendous progress over the last couple of days.’ It will be interesting to see from (head athletic trainer) Mike (Ryan) but all tales tell us that he made good progress. …

“We always challenge our guys to really push themselves to the edge, push yourself to the edge because that’s how you have a greater chance to get better. … That was the conversation I had with him. He’s got to be smart but continue to push yourself there so you gain confidence where the injury is at.”

Cyprien, who did not miss a snap this season before missing last week’s game, said he was more confident Friday than earlier in the week.

“It’s pretty promising,” he said. “It felt good out there.”

The status of defensive tackle Roy Miller also is uncertain for Sunday.

Miller, who has started all 14 games this season, has played through a shoulder injury much of the season. He has practiced on a limited basis for much of the last month with the idea of resting to be able to play in games.

Miller missed practice this week with the idea of again being able to play, but Bradley said his status for Sunday is more uncertain this week.

He also is listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report of the week.

“It might be a little bit different than weeks prior but we’re still going to try to buy these next two days to see how he does,” Bradley said.

Also around the Jaguars Friday:

*Wide receiver Ace Sanders on Thursday achieved what he said was a life-long dream when he closed on a home for his mother, Twanda. Sanders, a fourth-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft from South Carolina, said Twanda didn’t know about the house until Thursday. He was in a meeting as the closing was being finalized. “I got back to my locker and had emails and a lot of missed calls,” Sanders said. “Most of the missed calls were from her. She was just real excited.” Sanders said Twanda was in tears, and he told her she didn’t need to cry, to just go enjoy the house. Sanders also said he had to hang up quickly and text her. “I can’t sit on the phone when my mom’s crying,” he said, laughing, “because eventually that (him crying) would have happened.”…

*Wide receiver Jeremy Ebert was placed on injured reserve with an ankle sprain. The Jaguars also signed wide receiver Lamaar Thomas and defensive tackle Jordan Miller from the practice squad to bring the active roster to 53 players….

*Linebacker Geno Hayes did not practice Friday and is questionable for Sunday, when he will work out before the game to determine his status. He left the loss to Buffalo twice with the knee injury. J.T. Thomas would start his place….

*On the other side of the linebacking corps, John Lotulelei will start with Russell Allen having been placed on injured reserve this week with a concussion….

*Bradley also said he expects cornerback Alan Ball to play. Ball missed practice Thursday with a shoulder injury, but worked limited Friday and is listed as probable. “He should be fine,” Bradley said….

*Safety Josh Evans (shoulder), middle linebacker Paul Posluszny (groin) and linebacker Nate Stupar (neck) are listed as probable after working limited Friday and tight end Marcedes Lewis (thigh) and offensive lineman Austin Pasztor (shoulder) are listed as probable after working full Friday....
