Inside the Jaguars: Mincey status uncertain

Posted Nov 29, 2013

Jacksonville Jaguars HC Gus Bradley leaning toward having DL Jeremy Mincey inactive against Cleveland Browns Sunday.

JACKSONVILLE – Jeremy Mincey’s status entering the weekend is uncertain.

And although the Jaguars’ sixth-year defensive end very much wants to play on Sunday, he said Friday whatever decision Gus Bradley makes, he understands.

Bradley, the Jaguars’ first-year head coach, said on Friday while he has yet to decide if Mincey will play against the Cleveland Browns Sunday he is leaning toward making Mincey inactive for a second consecutive game.

“We still have to decide on that,” Bradley said Friday as the Jaguars (2-9) prepared to play the Cleveland Browns (4-7) at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Bradley said he plans to speak to Mincey Saturday.

“I want to talk to him one final time,” Bradley said. “For me, I would be leaning towards he’s inactive, I will say that. I’m leaning towards that but I have not yet discussed it with him, the team, so I will hopefully today some and finalize it again tomorrow.”

Mincey did not travel with the team to Houston last weekend for violating team rules. He told reporters this week he had overslept and missed a meeting.

“I’ll follow the head man’s lead – that’s it,” Mincey said. “I’ve just got to be more consistent with being a team guy, doing everything the right way.”

Also Friday, Bradley said wide receiver Mike Brown will be listed as questionable.

Brown, who missed last week’s game with an AC joint (shoulder) injury, practiced on a limited basis Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Bradley said Brown likely will be a game-time decision.

“We’ll work him out on Sunday morning and see where he’s at,” Bradley said. “We still need to take a look at him. He felt like it looked pretty good, but we’ll have to see what happens on Sunday and see how he feels.”

Brown said Sunday will be about seeing if he can function enough to be effective.

“It’s as simple as that,” he said. “It’s frustrating because you want to be out there to compete every single week. You’ve got guys in this locker room you busted your tail with forever. We do that to play on Sundays. That’s why you’re here.”

Rookie Ace Sanders started for Brown last week, playing 37 players and catching four passes for 61 yards. First-year veteran Kerry Taylor played 57 plays and caught one pass for seven yards as the Jaguars played just three receivers against Houston.

“I’m pleased with the way Kerry Taylor and Ace played last week,” Bradley said.

Wide receiver Cecil Shorts III played all but two of the Jaguars’ 70 plays, catching eight passes for 71 yards.

Bradley said Jeremy Ebert will be the fourth receiver active if Brown can’t play.

“I think that’s almost the norm a little bit that we’re not quite sure who’s going to be available,” Bradley said of a receiver position that has faced uncertainty much of the season. “The good thing is that they all have practiced and we’ve gotten them all in there. That’s important for timing and things like that but you’d like to get it to where you know consistently who’s going to be up for the quarterbacks and for the team, but we’ll adjust and guys will step up.”

Also on Friday:

*Wide receiver Stephen Burton (concussion) and running back Justin Forsett (foot) were ruled out for Sunday, with Brown the only other player considered uncertain for Sunday. …

*Defensive tackle Roy Miller (shoulder) worked limited Friday after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday. That has been his routine in recent weeks, with the idea of resting him during the week so he can play Sunday….

*The following players were listed as probable on the final injury report: cornerback Will Blackmon (shoulder), offensive tackle Cameron Bradfield (bicep), defensive end Andre Branch (knee), safety Winston Guy (shoulder), linebacker Geno Hayes (knee), guard Will Rackley (illness), wide receiver Cecil Shorts III (groin) and linebacker J.T. Thomas (ankle)….
