2014 offseason: Lee makes it official

Posted Jul 18, 2014

Jaguars WR Marqise Lee signs rookie contract; entire 2014 draft class now signed.

JACKSONVILLE – Marqise Lee made it official Friday.

Because he did, the Jaguars’ rookie class – and indeed, the entire roster – is officially signed exactly a week before the first practice of 2014 training camp.

Lee, a wide receiver from the University of Southern California who agreed to terms on a four-year contract on Wednesday, officially signed the deal late Friday morning in the Jaguars’ offices at EverBank Field.

“I have a lot of work to do,” Lee said. “That’s the main thing I need to focus on. It feels good to sign it and get it done. I’m officially on the team, but I still have a lot of work to do.”

Jaguars players are scheduled to report for 2014 Training Camp, and the first practice is scheduled to be held the following morning.

Lee, who became the last of the team’s nine 2014 NFL Draft selections to sign, overcame a difficult childhood to be drafted into the NFL. His parents are both deaf, and an older brother died in gang-related activity.

“When I was younger, I couldn’t tell you what I was going to do growing up,” he said. “Having the ability to be able to be here doing this is amazing.”

Details of the contract were not released. All rookies except for first-round selections sign four-year contracts.

Lee declared for the draft following his junior season, catching 248 passes in three seasons for 3,655 yards and 29 touchdowns. He won the Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s top receiver as a sophomore, a year in which he was named the Pac 12 Offensive Player of the Year, and also was a unanimous All-America selection and a Pac 12 All-Conference first-team selection.

Lee started 13 games as a sophomore, catching 118 passes for 1,721 yards and 14 touchdowns. He started 11 games as a junior and caught 57 passes for 791 yards and four touchdowns.

Lee missed much of the Jaguars’ on-field offseason work with an ankle injury, but said Friday he expects to be able to participate in training camp.

“I’ve just really been focused on treatment during the break,” Lee said.

The Jaguars earlier in the offseason signed first-round quarterback Blake Bortles (Central Florida), second-round wide receiver Allen Robinson (Penn State), third-round guard Brandon Linder (Miami), fourth-round cornerback Aaron Colvin (Oklahoma), fifth-round linebacker Telvin Smith (Florida State), fifth-round defensive end Chris Smith (Arkansas), sixth-round center Luke Bowanko (Virginia) and seventh-round running back Storm Johnson (Central Florida).
