Caldwell: Beadles role clear

Posted Mar 11, 2014

Jaguars GM David Caldwell on expected free-agent signing OG Zane Beadles: “He’s very intelligent, he’s very competitive and he’s very smart.”

JACKSONVILLE – Zane Beadles won’t have any trouble knowing his new role.

Beadles, an offensive guard who played previously with the Denver Broncos, is expected to sign with the Jaguars as unrestricted free agent, a move Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell discussed on a conference call Tuesday afternoon.

Caldwell said there’s no question why Beadles was signed, and said there was just as little question where he’ll likely play.

“We’ll put him at left guard, right next to (second-year left tackle) Luke (Joeckel),” Caldwell said.

Caldwell said Beadles is expected to arrive in Jacksonville Tuesday night with a physical examination possible Wednesday morning.

Beadles signing was the first move of an offseason in which the Jaguars are expected to heavily address the interior of the offensive line. Center Brad Meester retired following the 2013 season after 14 NFL seasons, and the Jaguars last week released longtime veteran starting right guard Uche Nwaneri.

Beadles, 27, who played collegiately at the University of Utah, was a second-round selection by Denver in the 2010 NFL Draft. He has started 62 of a possible 64 games in four NFL seasons, starting the first six games of his career at right tackle in 2010 and starting at left guard since.

Beadles was a Pro Bowl selection following the 2012 season.

“He played tackle in college, so he has some flexibility,” Caldwell said.  “He’s very intelligent, he’s very competitive and he’s very smart.”

Caldwell said he scouted and researched Beadles heavily as a member of the Atlanta Falcons’ personnel department in 2010.

“He’s had a heck of a career to-date,” Caldwell said. “He’s a guy with a proven track record. He’s still only 27 years old. He’s very passionate about football. I think he checks the box for everything we look for in a player.”

The Jaguars now have five guards on the roster: Beadles, guard Jacques McClendon, guard Drew Nowak, guard/center Mike Brewster and guard/center Will Rackley.

Caldwell said Beadles should fit well into the Jaguars’ zone-blocking scheme, which they moved heavily toward last season under offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch and offensive line coach George Yarno.

“We felt like in terms of being a scheme-fit for what we do in the run-game, that he could really flourish for us and that there’s better football still in front of him,” Caldwell said.
