Final game notes: Jaguars vs. Bills

Posted Dec 2, 2012

An insightful look behind-the-numbers of today's Jaguars and Bills game in Buffalo, NY.

Posluszny records interception in homecoming

Sixth-year pro Paul Posluszny returned to the city where his NFL career started and wasted little time making an impact.  Posluszny, who was a second-round pick of the Bills in 2007, intercepted Ryan Fitzpatrick in the second quarter to set up a Josh Scobee field goal and tied for the team-lead with nine tackles.  Posluszny tied cornerback Derek Cox for the team-lead with three interceptions in 12 games and matched his single-season high of three in 2009 with the Bills.

Shorts lead the way

Second-year wide receiver Cecil Shorts finished with a game-high seven receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown.  Shorts left the game in the fourth quarter with a head injury and did not return.  He had receptions of 18, 20 and 24 yards and scored on a five-yard catch in the fourth quarter.  His team-high seven touchdowns through 12 games are tied for the most by a Jaguars receiver since 2007 (Reggie Williams, 10).

Two more 20-plus yard receptions for Shorts

Cecil Shorts finished with two receptions of 20-plus yards (20 and 24 yards) to increase his season total to 16.  The 16 receptions of 20-plus yards are the most by a Jaguar since 2004 (Jimmy Smith, 19).  He already owns the franchise record with four receptions of 50-plus yards through 12 games.

Henne reaches 8,000 career passing yards; 1,000 for the season.

Quarterback Chad Henne made his second start for the Jaguars and completed 18 of 41 passes for 208 yards with one touchdown and one interception along with a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Henne has 8,152 passing yards in 42 career games.

Henne, who has 1,038 passing yards in six games, became the sixth quarterback in franchise history to throw for 1,000 yards, joining Mark Brunell (25,698), David Garrard (16,003), Byron Leftwich (9,042), Blaine Gabbert (3,876) and Quinn Gray (1,252).

Busy day for Montell Owens

Montell Owens, a two-time Pro Bowl special teamer, had his first carries of the season against the Bills.  Owens rushed a career-high seven times for 29 yards, the second-most yards of his career (41, Sept. 28, 2008 vs. Houston).  He also had one reception for 11 yards and one special teams tackle.  He scored on a run for a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, the club’s third successful two-point try this season.

Fullback Greg Jones returns to lineup

Ninth-year fullback Greg Jones was back in the starting lineup after missing four games with a thigh injury. Jones had played in 39 consecutive games before he was inactive against Detroit on Nov. 4

Jennings leaves game with a head injury

Rashad Jennings suffered a head injury in the second quarter following a 12-yard run.  Jennings, who has 101 carries for 283 yards in 12 games, did not return after finishing with eight carries for 20 yards.  He became the first player other than Maurice Jones-Drew to have 100 carries for the Jaguars since 2008.

Season-high in receiving yards for Lewis

Tight end Marcedes Lewis produced a season-high 68 receiving yards on four receptions including a 23-yard catch in the first quarter.  Lewis has 37 receptions for 398 yards through 12 games, two receptions shy of his total from 2011.

Babin makes first start as a Jaguar

After being claimed off waivers from Philadelphia on Wednesday, defensive end Jason Babin was in the starting lineup at Buffalo on Sunday.  Babin was credited with four tackles including one for loss.

Tidbits

  • Josh Scobee connected on his only field goal attempt, a 36-yarder in the second quarter.  Scobee has hit 20 of 21 field goals attempts (95.2 pct.) through the first 12 games.
  • The Jaguars scored on all three trips to the red zone with two touchdowns and a field goal.  In the last three games, the club has eight trips to the red zone which resulted in six touchdowns and two field goals.
  • The Jaguars had four completions of 20-plus yards while the Bills had two plays of 20-plus yards (1 rush, 1 pass).
  • The Jaguars were called for their first delay of game penalty of the season in the first quarter.
  • The Jaguars did not record a sack for the fourth game this season and first time since week four against Cincinnati.
  • Buffalo’s Fred Jackson became only the third running back to rush for 100 yards against the Jaguars through 12 games as he finished with 109 yards on 25 carries.  Houston’s Arian Foster (110) and Chicago’s Matt Forte (107) also accomplished the feat.
  • Wide receiver Quan Cosby and cornerback Antwaun Molden made their debut with the Jaguars today.  Cosby had two punt returns for a 10.5-yard average and five kickoff returns for a 19.8-yard average.
  • The Bills scored on three straight possessions with the final two of the first half and the opening drive of the third quarter.  It was the first score on the opening drive of the second half for a Jaguars opponent since week five against Chicago.
  • The Jaguars allowed a season-high 232 rushing yards on 46 carries. Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick attempted only 17 passes, the fewest attempts by an opposing quarterback through 12 games.
  • Rookie wide receiver Kevin Elliott had two catches for 24 yards.
  • The Jaguars were 0-for-3 on fourth down, all coming in the second half.
  • The Jaguars’ 236 total yards (50 rushing, 186 passing) were the fewest by the club since Oct. 21 at Oakland (209).
  • Inactives for the Jaguars were wide receiver Toney Clemons, cornerback Derek Cox, running back Jordan Todman, running back Maurice Jones-Drew, center/guard Steve Vallos, defensive end Austen Lane and defensive tackle Jeris Pendleton.
