First Off the Field, 7/25

Posted Jul 25, 2014

The latest Jaguars news, as the team concludes Day 1 of 2014 Training Camp.

JACKSONVILLE – Sun shone, music played, fans crowded around.

But most of all, practice happened – the first practice of 2014 Jaguars Training Camp – and for Head Coach Gus Bradley, that not only made it an exciting day Friday, but a good day, too.

“We’re really excited about our guys,” Bradley said afterward.

The Jaguars practiced for about two-and-a-half hours Friday, doing so in 88 degree temperatures in front of a crowd that packed the bleachers at the Florida Blue Health and Wellness Practice Fields adjacent to EverBank Field.

“It was extremely competitive,” Bradley said. “That usually happens the first day. We’ll have to tone some things down a little bit as far as making sure we stay off the ground. Overall, it was pretty good.”

Wide receiver Cecil Shorts III was the only reported injury situation on Day 1. The fourth-year veteran starter left practice with tightness in his hamstring.

Shorts missed time in the offseason on field work with a calf issue.

Bradley said overall the day was a “good start.”

“We’re not where we want to be by any means,” he said. “But we’re better than we were before, so that’s a good thing.”

The team on the first day for the most part worked close to full capacity, with cornerbacks Alan Ball and linebacker Dekoda Watson on the Physically Unable to Perform list and rookie cornerback Aaron Colvin on the non-football injury list. Watson is expected to be back some time later in camp, while Ball could return next week. Colvin is not expected to return until at least Week 6.

Wide receiver Ace Sanders is not currently attending practice to attend to personal issues. Linebacker John Lotulelei (hamstring) also did not practice, and safety Josh Evans (foot) is opening camp limited.

Bradley said he was pleased overall with the team’s conditioning.

“I thought it was very good,” he said. “You didn’t see guys sitting out, tapping out or anything like that. They really responded well. Now, we’ll see when I get the report. But everything I heard walking off the field was good.”

Bradley said the team did commit too many penalties on the first day.

“We’ve got to take them out of our game,” he said. “I’m looking more at the foolish penalties – lining up offsides, false starts, pass interference. Aggressive penalties are going to be part of it, but the foolish things we have to take care of.”

Bradley said overall, though, he liked the first day.

“The good thing is I loved how they came out,” Bradley said. “Right from the start, you could see they were going to capture this practice. It was extremely competitive.”

The Jaguars will hold a walkthrough practice later Friday afternoon, and will hold a practice that is open to the public at 9:55 Saturday. That practice will not be in pads.

The team will begin working in full pads Wednesday, July 30.

INJURY WATCH

Ball (ankle) and Watson (sports hernia) are opening camp on the Physically Unable to Peform list, with Colvin (knee) opening on the non-football injury list. Safety Josh Evans (foot) is limited to start practice. Linebacker John Lotulelei (hamstring) also was out to start camp.
