Gabbert traded to San Francisco 49ers

Jaguars trade quarterback Blaine Gabbert to San Francisco 49ers as free agency begins

JACKSONVILLE – Blaine Gabbert’s time with Jacksonville ended Tuesday afternoon.

His time on the West Coast began at the same time.

Gabbert, the Jaguars’ starting quarterback to open the 2012 and 2013 regular seasons and the No. 10 overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, was traded to the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday.

He was traded to the 49ers for an undisclosed draft pick.

The move ended Gabbert’s Jaguars career after three seasons. He started 27 of 28 games played, starting 14 as a rookie in 2011, 10 in 2012 and three this past season.  He moved into the starting lineup in Week 3 of his rookie season.

Gabbert earned the starting quarterback role in 2013, but after starting three of the first five games of the season did not play again after sustaining a hamstring injury in a Week 5 loss at St. Louis. He started the regular-season opener, but missed the next two games with a thumb/hand injury.

He returned to health before the Jaguars’ Week 8 loss to San Francisco, but Chad Henne – who started the season as Gabbert’s backup – remained the starter throughout the rest of the season.

Gabbert finished the 2013 season completing 42 of 86 passes for 481 yards and a touchdown with seven interceptions and a passer rating of 36.0. He finished his Jaguars career completing 414 of 777 passes for 4,357 yards and 22 touchdowns with 24 interceptions.

The Jaguars currently have three quarterbacks on the roster: Henne, Matt Scott and Ricky Stanzi. The team signed Henne to a two-year contract Monday and Head Coach Gus Bradley said he expects Henne to start the regular-season opener next season.

The Jaguars are also expected to select a quarterback in the May 8-10 2014 NFL Draft, though General Manager David Caldwell has said often in recent weeks they may not select one with the No. 3 overall selection in the draft.
