Jacksonville Jaguars select Johnathan Cyprien with first selection of second round of 2013 NFL Draft

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars have selected Johnathan Cyprien  in the second round of the NFL Draft.

Cyprien, a safety from Florida International, was the first selection of the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the 33rd selection overall.

Speculation leading to the draft and after the first round had been the Jaguars might trade the selection, with General Manager David Caldwell saying for several months he believed the selection would have value to teams looking to move up.

There also had been speculation the team would select a quarterback in the second round. Instead, the team opted to address secondary.

Cyprien (6-feet-0, 217 pounds) had been projected by many as a possible first-round selection, having been a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection as a senior.

A four-year letterman, he appeared in 50 games, starting the last 45. He set a school record with 365 tackles, 22 passes defensed and 13.5 tackles for loss.

Former Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell announced the selection.
