Jaguars sign C Caldwell, Posluszny won’t make Chicago trip

Posted Aug 13, 2014

Jaguars sign C Antoine Caldwell; MLB Paul Posluszny won’t make trip to Chicago for second game of 2014 preseason.

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars have made a move at the center position.

Antoine Caldwell, a veteran center originally a third-round selection by the Houston Texans in the 2009 NFL Draft, re-signed with the Jaguars Wednesday afternoon. The team waived/injured Matt Stankiewitch, who missed practice Thursday with a wrist injury.

Also on Wednesday, middle linebacker Paul Posluszny did not make the trip with the team to Chicago for Thursday night’s preseason game with a Chicago Bears. He has what the team said is a very minor biceps contusion and remained in Jacksonville for treatment.

Caldwell (6-feet-3, 315 pounds) who played at the University of Alabama, was with the Jaguars in mid-May on a tryout basis for the team’s rookie minicamp. He was not offered a contract.

Caldwell has started 19 of 39 games in the NFL, spending four seasons – 2009-2012 – with the Texans. He started three games in 2009, seven in 2010, three in 2011 and six in 2012. He spent training camp with the Buffalo Bills in 2013, but did not make the team.

The Jaguars, after the retirement in the offseason of longtime starting center Brad Meester, have worked several players at the position in training camp, with third-year veteran Mike Brewster starting the preseason opener against Friday last week and expected to start Thursday against Chicago.

Jacques McClendon also has worked at center with the first team in practice. Rookie third-round selection Brandon Linder is expected to get work at the position Thursday, as is rookie sixth-round selection Luke Bowanko.
