Jaguars to honor family of J.T. Townsend on Sunday

Posted Sep 5, 2013

The Jacksonville Jaguars will honor the family of the late J.T. Townsend on Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will honor the family of the late J.T. Townsend on Sunday, September 8 prior to the club’s season-opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Townsend was paralyzed from the neck down during a high school football game in 2004 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Florida earlier this year.  He passed away on June 5, but his legacy continues to live on through the J.T. Townsend Foundation which provides financial assistance, adaptive equipment and research funding for children and adults with disabilities on the First Coast.

“We are all better people for having known J.T.,” Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley said. “I personally only met him a couple of times but he left a lasting impact on me with his energy and passion with how he lived his life.  Our entire organization is excited about the opportunity to recognize his legacy and the great work his foundation is doing in our community.”

Townsend’s parents, Carmen and Jerry, along with his sisters, Sunshine and Precious, will be honored before Sunday’s game.

Additionally, the J. T. Townsend Foundation is the charity recipient for the Jaguars 50/50 Raffle for Charity at Sunday’s game.  Fans can purchase raffle tickets, with a chance to be the big winner of half of the net proceeds.  The other half will benefit the Jaguars Foundation and J. T. Townsend Foundation.

Volunteers will sell raffle tickets to fans.  There will be four permanent kiosks; located on the main concourse by the Bud Zone and near the ramps at Gates 2, 3 and 4; as well as eight mobile sellers who will be in the pre-game tailgate areas and in the stadium during the game through the end of the third quarter.  The winning raffle ticket number will be announced during the fourth quarter of the game. Winners do not need to be present to win.

Peter Racine, President of the Jaguars Foundation, said, “We are proud to provide this unique opportunity for the fans to support the J. T. Townsend Foundation that has helped hundreds of youth and adults in honor of J. T. and the example he set.”
